Change Your Status to an F-1 Student Visa
Yes, Latitude Language can help you with an I-20 so you can apply for a Change of Status to an F-1 student visa.
This option may be available if you are currently in the U.S. with a B1/B2, J-1, or F-2 visa and want to change your status to F-1 student status.
Before getting started, please review the information below so you understand the requirements, costs, timeline, and documents needed.
Who This Is For
Our Change of Status process is for students who:
- Are currently in the U.S. with eligible visa status. B1/B2 visitor visas must wait a minimum of 90 days before filing with USCIS.Â
- Want to change to F-1 student status
- Can commit to at least 4 months of study at Latitude Language
- Understand that they must submit documentation and pay fees directly to USCIS
- Can show proof of funding for their stay and studies in the U.S.
Every case is a little different, so once we receive your application and documents, we will review your documentation and prepare a personalized study plan for you.
Proof of Funding Requirement
USCIS requires students to show that they have enough funding to study and live in the United States.
For the best chance of approval, we usually recommend applying for 12–24 months of study. We will recommend your duration of months upon review of Latitude Language’s online English Placement Test, part of our enrollment procedures.
For a 12-24 month period of study, students only have to show proof of funding for their first year of study:
- Tuition: US$650 per month x 10 months = US$6,500
- Living expenses: US$5,000
- Total required proof of funding: US$11,500
If you are applying with F-2 dependents, the total required proof of funding is US$12,500.
Bank statements may come from:
- Your personal bank account
- A family member’s account
- A sponsor’s account
- U.S. or foreign bank accounts
- A combination of accounts
The total must add up to at least the required amount.
If you need fewer than 12 months of study, let us know and we can recalculate your proof of funding amount.
Latitude Language Change of Status Fee
Latitude Language charges US$225 to begin the Change of Status process.
This includes:
- Change of Status visa documentation
- Latitude Language application processing
- Online English placement test
- Preparation of your school documents
Once payment is received and your documents are complete, we will email your Change of Status documentation within 2 business days, along with instructions for filing your I-539 with USCIS.
USCIS and SEVIS Fees
In addition to the Latitude Language fee, you will also need to pay government fees.
Current fees include:
- USCIS I-539 application fee: US$420 online or US$470 by paper filing
- SEVIS I-901 fee: US$350
Please make sure to budget for these fees before starting the process.
Filing Your I-539
You should file your I-539 within 30 days of receiving your documents from Latitude Language.
The sooner you file, the better.
After you submit your I-539, USCIS will send you a receipt number. Please send that receipt number to Latitude Language so we can track your case and report it to SEVIS. This helps connect your I-539 application to your I-20 record.
Before you submit your I-539, we are happy to review your draft application.
After Your Change of Status Is Approved
Once USCIS approves your Change of Status, you will receive an I-797 approval notice showing your approval for F-1 status.
At that point, you must begin classes at Latitude Language on the next available class start date.
F-1 students are required to study 18 hours per week.
Minimum Study Requirement
Latitude Language requires Change of Status students to study for a minimum of 4 months after F-1 approval.
Students make 3 tuition payments while waiting for USCIS to process the I-539 application. Current processing times are usually around 3–4 months.
Tuition Payment Schedule
- First tuition payment: US$650
Due 30 days from the date on your I-797 receipt confirming your I-539 submission. - Second tuition payment: US$650
Due 30 days after the first tuition payment. - Third tuition payment: US$650
Due 30 days after the second tuition payment. - Textbooks and student materials fee: US$170
Due once your F-1 status is approved and before your class start date.
Example Payment Timeline
Example:
You file your I-539 with USCIS on February 1, 2026.
USCIS issues your I-797 receipt with a received date of February 5, 2026.
Your three tuition payments would be due on:
- March 5
- April 5
- May 5
If your F-1 status is approved in July and your class start date is July 7, your US$170 textbooks and student materials fee would be due by July 7.
Your prepaid tuition covers your first two months of study, plus your Last Month Security Deposit. The Last Month Security Deposit will be applied to the final month you attend classes.
Please remember: you must notify the school one month in advance when you want to use your Last Month Security Deposit.
Refund and Cancellation Policy
If your Change of Status is denied, you will receive a full refund of your 3 months of prepaid tuition.
However, there is no refund of prepaid tuition if:
- You cancel your Change of Status application
- You transfer to another school before completing 4 months at Latitude Language
- You do not attend the full 4 months for any reason
Latitude Language will follow all required transfer procedures if you decide to transfer.
When we enroll a Change of Status student, we reserve a seat in class and plan for that student’s attendance while waiting for USCIS processing.
After your required 4 months of study, you may continue studying at Latitude Language by paying tuition monthly. Tuition is US$650 per month, due on the 1st of each month.
